Who remembers the Factory Fire that FPP tried back in 2004 or so
Went through three of them myself in 2002/2003. Eventually Ross took most or all of them back from racers. It cost me the Region 6 lead in 2003 due to taking the holeshot every race but either creeping across the finish from bad spark or DNF'ing entirely. No surprise it ended up getting called the Factory Fail Ignition by the end of the '03 season. :(

It would have been an awesome product had it been reliable. Good grounds were key, as were resistor plugs. I have a feeling many died from running non-resistor plugs since that's likely what were already in skis upgrading from the stock CDI or an MSD Enhancer. Interference is a bitch.

I still have the Windows .exe setup (dated 2002-03-08) and my old Palm device. If someone needs a working Palm or the executable file let me know. I doubt any of these ignitions are still in use though.

Hah! A floppy disk! I haven't seen one of those in years! Funny thing is I still have the drive sitting in a mobo box lol. Just as an addon to the CDI talk, I was talking with the fella that makes the Advent. The one I have which was DOA unfortunately, was of the very first batch he ever made. He said he was still struggling to get the timing management on spot...this was last year. But the unit I have was apparently known for backfiring so hard it would explode starter bendixes lol. I guess it was a good thing this one was DOA :D

I had a chance to run an epic on my bench tonight to verify my zero timing mark. I first set a flat curve to 0 and then again at 15 and both confirmed that my timing marks are in fact advanced by 2.5deg.

I had 2 more MSD units here so I ran all 3 and the results were identical to before.

I'm out of time tonight, (no pun intended), but I will post back here tomorrow with the corrected curves that reflect the 2.5deg correction. I will also remove or replace any previously posted data to prevent mis-information in the future.

CDI Timing Mapping - Corrected.jpg

While I did not have time to run through the modded CDI's again, I did have the chance to check the timing on one and vary the trim pot to see if adjusting the rev limiter had any affect on timing. I'm happy to report that it had no affect whatsoever.

I also verified my stator was in fact lined up with the case mark.

Things to test next;
- multiple unmodded stock CDI's
- different 62T flywheel than my current beat up one
- 61X stator/flywheel with 62T CDI
- 62T stator/flywheel with 61X CDI

Any other ideas?

I'd say 760 electronics testing and how to mod the cdi. I like the timing of a 760. I personally think I like it better than an msd enhancer with 61x lightened flywheel on a 760 oem. What I'm saying is the 760 stock electronics works great and a mod to the rev limiter would be the ticket mr OCD.
Add that to the wish list.

I'm volunteering minutes to this projects not hours so I can tell you all right now that further research and development into modifying the 760 electronics ain't gonna happen. I'll map one out if someone can put one in my hands but that's about all the time I can commit.

Protec has done the homework and offers it as a product so why not support them?

What happened to the Epic HX3 cdi? That was the closest to the Vilder in concept

It's no longer for sale?

They pulled it off the market. No offense to atp but they were hit or miss in terms of reliability.

It's crazy that there is not one reliable and adjustable aftermarket cdi available for the 701.

Depends who you talk to. I have never lost an MSD and my original Gen 1 Epic hasn't skipped a beat.

When they do fail, I will be running a modded stock CDI with a 3 deg advance on the stator plate with a TBM flywheel.
