Got the pump/mishaft installed. Required a little bit of grinding on the top of the pump housing/wear ring to accomodate the pump tunnell shape and depth. No big deal there. I might have ground off approx 1/8" of material, but it was needed to insure alignment. I added a few pics of the engine bay to show spatial orientation for a few peeps that have asked. I had Berky put my battery back under the exhaust to help centralize the mass of the ski better. I had to change from a Jetworks batt to a DEKA to fit the area, but it fits real well. Berky left a channel under the batt tray for strap setup.

I am going to run a C.A.T.S. trim system for right now. I will prolly upgrade to an Xmetal system for next season, but I thought I'd try one of these out. The additional parts needed plus the Xmetal parts was more than I wanted to spend now. The CATS setup cost me $125 shipped for everything so I'll try it and report. May need to D cut the back of tray a bit to appreciate the trim.

I had some left over 3M carbon fiber film so I played around last night with some free time. I wrapped the steering nozzle. I had originally painted it red and didn't like it as much as if I had just painted it black...so thought I'd hit it with the carbon film and try to make it look XFT style. It came out decent for a free hand trimming. I managed to drop it a few times and chip some of the paint off the nozzle. I gave it 4 coats of clear after completed to help maintain the film on the nozzle. I need to grind the right sided cooling port on the pump since the steering cable is being bowed quite a bit by that fitting. Mcdog recommended a dremmel grooved cut into it to save me from pulling the pump again. Good idea.

I'm moved by DASA power!
How much do you need to grind off? Just the edge? I just installed my X-metal trim and it is pretty snug to that fitting! i really dont want to break my steering cable after I just installed a new one!

I had the same thing on my hull. I ended up grinding that cooling section down completely and JB welded it closed. Then I retapped a new hole higher on the pump, installed the NPT fitting, and JB welded that for reinforcement since the material isn't very thick. It's been holding up fine.

Then again, with this freak cold front, it might be best to take the easiest/quickest way out and in another month when it's too cold to ride, fix it permanently.

That's funny! You may at this time retract that statement and no one will hold you too it.

I hear you there, but I'm at the end of my rope with building skis. I guess if I ever get another it will be a complete setup. Wrenching sux...and so does lost family time that could he spent with them instead of wasted on building a ski.

Mcdog said he "groove cut" his fitting with the thin flathead grinding wheel on a dremmel. Almost like cutting a slot into it. I like waternuts idea too, but time, weather and me being off a ski for 6 weeks is wearing me down. I want on the water now.

It's funny how we keep saying this, yet we keep doing it over and over anyway.

Not trying to hijack the thread - my mistake was thinking you get more ski for less by building it. Seems the biggest bang is buying someone else's build. Less money, less time.

I think it's time well spent myself. More wrenching time now on a sick build will mean less wrenching later and more riding/Fam time.

Other than regular maintenance I don't wrench on either of my skis near as much as my old ones.

Pablo will figure out a way to wrench on his ski. I've never seen anyone hate wrenching so much but do it so often. As soon as everything is 95% dialed in, the guy changes something...haha

I forget which way the SJ nozzles normally have the steering ball mounted but if it's normally on top, you could move it to the bottom and that alone may give you the clearance.
