Superjet - Project RS *Build Complete (for now)*

Thanks guys, here's an update.

I've been staring at the front end of my ski for awhile now, trying to decide how to finish it off. I wanted to keep the length of the rocker, but that would result in an "underbite" look (which I didn't want).

I also wanted to do something different, something to make my ski stand out. So here's the direction I decided on....

So I got to work. I got the general shape in place with some foam.

And then I used multiple layers of 1208 biaxial and cabosil mix to finalize the shape and get the strength needed.

Once I was happy with the shape, I laid a final layer of visual 2x2 twill.

There was a lot of print-through, so I wet sanded and then finished it off with a nice smooth layer of resin.

And lastly, I wrapped the pole in a layer of carbon.

Nice work Serge! I like what you are doing with the nose, are you going to continue that theme anywhere else on the hull?

Thanks!! And yes, I'm keeping the theme throughout the hull.... Where exactly? I wish I knew! I keep changing my mind every time I look at the ski. I suppose time will tell.

I would like to keep the theme going on the hood, but I'm not committing myself to making my own hood until I'm happy with the ride plate (hopefully making a 3rd one this coming weekend - cross your fingers for good results). Regardless, summer is around the corner and the ski is far from done, so the hood project might get pushed until next winter.

Progress has been really slow on this project, and now I'm working out of town, so I expect it to be even slower now unfortunately.

The ski came with a homemade aluminum pole bracket, and it was bent and had a major crack in it. So I designed a new one in Solidworks. Here's an exploded view that shows the locating features I designed into it, to make sure it got welded together properly.

It's all 3/16" stainless and it's overkill (which is what I wanted). My friend welded it, but didn't finish it, as you can see. I'll meet up with him and use the TIG to finish weld the entire thing.

And here's the backing plate, which is a little thinner (10g stainless). I know this part isn't visible when it's installed, but I wanted to get creative and enjoy the the waterjet. Haha!

I'm not usually a fan of the rockered and shortened ski's, but I really like what you're doing with this one! Definitely want to see how this turns out. Love the attention to detail.

Oh, and you can never take too many pictures!

Thanks guys! Nate, a good friend has access to a waterjet.

As I already said, I'm working out of town right now, which has put this project at a halt! But when I get back home, I'll be working on the ski again. So stay tuned for updates.

My time away hasn't been completely wasted... I've improved my MS Paint skills and I've been playing around with different color schemes for the ski. :p

Awesome build thread so far! I like what you did with the pole, I think the more structural expanding foam will help with the strength as compared to the Styrofoam which seems like it's mainly there just to take up air and add flotation.

Nice work with the nose too!

In regards to this specific build... No progress at all. Owning a home, travelling for work, and many summer shenanigans have all gotten in the way!

But in regards to the sport...
-I picked up a few hulls; planning future projects and I want to give fixed steer a try!
-My wife and I have been riding her "new" SN 701. Runs great after swapping pumps out of it (impeller was in really rough shape).
-Took my brothers new 2015 XFS for a ride, and I absolutely loved it.

All of the above has motivated me to work on the build, but unfortunately motivation isn't what I need. Time is what I need! I'm leaving town again for work (most of July) and have numerous events planned throughout August (mostly weddings and a few trips). As a result, I'm not expecting much progress throughout the next few months. I'm not giving up, but realistically, this project will be completed through the winter and ready for some freerides in 2016.
