The thrill is gone is number ____ on ____ top 500. The number brings you back to your own post but one of the rules says all the chosen posts are from others.

If i were you i would cut the carbon to the size of "patch" you need and then you have carbon on carbon. A circle for the exhaust side and a square for the scupper side when i finished mine up i layed glass on the inside then "patched" the outside.

I was honestly hoping to be laying glass down by now.

I figured by the time I had given out all the clues, I would be much farther along.
Oh well... the contest must go on.

And i'm pretty sure this last clue will pretty much seal the deal. I've been thinking about the 15 PM's... its a little advantageous.

I'm up for ideas. I've already recieved one guess. Maybe make it the 5th PM?

I dunno... this is as much for ya'll as it is for me. How should I pick a 'winner'?

Maybe i'll put one more layer on the the inside. I don't want to put any carbon on the outside. I'm very concerned about it adhering to the SMC having it crack and delaminate because of the force of the water.

Yes, the entire bottom deck is SMC as far as I know, outside is painted.

Are you worried about the force of the water blasting the back of the hull pushing that carbon in then? If you really don't want to do much bodywork I would cut some patch panels to fill the holes in the hull, epoxy those in then lay a layer or two of thin S glass over the end to seal the edges. I would definitely not use bondo to fill those areas!

Sorry to derail your thread with jetski nonsense...

No, my first concern is water seeping in while the ski sits in the water, basic displacement. The less that water seeps in the better. I don't have versi plugs in my drains, so if a lot of water is coming in, it will create unnecessary weight, even for the day.

The "blasting" off concern is if I wrap the rear with carbon, I.e. around to the sides/ bottom some distance. Then poor adhesion + water pressure and abuse could cause the carbon to come off. Plus my carbon is quite thick, so it would have more of an 'edge'

I like the patch panel idea the best. I'll do that, and then try my fill it with water trick.

overfill the voids with thickened epoxy.
sand it smooth. clean with acetone.
lay one layer of s-glass over the back letting it hang off the bottom of the hull a lil bit. (I would use white pig here to avoid paint)
after it cures...sand the edges of the glass off to the profile of the hull. done. or brush on one more glaze of white pigmented lightly thickened epoxy to smooth out the glass texture.

Your one stop shop for quality parts @highspeedind
I had to cover up the exhaust hole on my sj. On the inside I did a few layers of glass. On the outside I just used some thickened resin and I added some chopped strand for strength. You will have to do something to make the surface level anyway so I suggest thickened resin.

It worked great for me but I don't want to make your decisions. Idk what else you would use besides thickened resin. Bondo, mighty putty, play dough, goat semen?! Idk it's your show not mine. Just as long as you make progress.

Now you can continue over thinking.

I've heard... from a reliable source... who MAY or MAY NOT back flip women in bed.... that goat semen and play dough are unbelieveably robust when combined.... I'm just sayin.

So... one of my clues is all effed up. Wikipedia Effed me on 'The Thrill is Gone' clue, they effed me right in my goat hole. So I've decided that when I submit the second to the last clue, i'm going to make one long post, with ALL the clues, including the corrected clue. (If you want to be ahead of the game, you can search that clue in that place and you'll already know the answer!)

I had big plans to work on my ski on Saturday... Like... Hire a sitter to watch my kids so I can get something done. Unfortunately (or fortunately...) I've been asked to do some fauxtography work on Sat... So maybe Sunday, I dunno.

I'll post up the second to the last clue on Monday. And I'll take the 5th guess... of which one has already been received. I have not procured the prize yet because I want to try and tailor it to the winner (and what they drink..... :sneaky:)

BTW... on a somewhat personal note.... I went out with my boss and some clients last night..... And.....

once again this thread has managed to put a smile on my face when nothing else can seem to at the moment.

Question about the bondo. I had a friend who used bondo on his hood and upon a hard landing it popped off. I have been told that bondo does not flex but the fiberglass hull will thus it can pop it off. Please correct me if i am wrong... He also did not glass over the bond.

I used this stuff when i smoothed the bottom of my ski out that was like a bondo with fiberglass in it can't remember what it was though.

You probably used dynaglass.

The best 'filler' that i've read about is the 3M phenolic balloons mixed with resin.

Glad my Epic fcuking headache can entertain you... I seriously feel like death... LOL...

Bondo makes a filler with chop or glass kitty hair already mixed in, IMO i would stay away from it. Bondo (pink) has its uses, but i wouldnt put it on a ski or much less below a waterline at all. If you sealed it and glassed over, it would suffice im sure, but theres much better products out there that are made for the moisture and flexing. I have had decent luck with the 3M marine grade stuff. Resin (epoxy) with micro fibers or ballons or equiv is a great filler and very strong. you can encase hardware in it and it holds really strong. like hull inserts and mounts for pump studs and so on.
