wow, that yellow one has to be more rare than the green or the blue ones. any of the yellow 400's I've ever seen were smc hulls.

it was only 30 dollars for both sides , a cheap way to make ski look better, i love this story of finding something cheap or the owner did not know what they had, i wonder if the jet ski companys keep a ski for each year they make

Haha, just found out more history on this ski.

The guy who owned it has worked for Kawasaki for 40+ years now. He lost it in a divorce when he lived here in Havasu for awhile and his wife left it in the storage garage that never got paid up. He is Japanese and still works for Kawi and is currently in Japan. He has a place over in LA and I guess hes coming back next week. We are gonna talk with him.

Also we found out that this in fact never did make it to the water ever and was a floor only model..

We also found out that there is no crankshaft, pistons, stator or flywheel inside the motor. Just everything else to make it look good from the outside! It was just for looks to sit on a Factory Kawasaki showroom floor.
Thats why the gas tank has no smell of gas, just old plastic..lol

Thanks!

Ya, I've seen those and they've been used before. They weren't exactly mint if you look closely at the pics. This one has never been used and its all original. Even the mats and the hood seal are primo.

Its funny that the pump bolts go down through the tray and the mats have slots built into them.

I agree it does takes the right buyers for about anything to bring top dollar, and thats Factory Kawi.
Like i said a mint 74 hand laid sold recently for $13,700.

Chris Macclugge and Bill Chapin(owner of R&D) were down there at Body today testing during our photo shoot and Chris said a friend of his in Cali bought a close to mint Hand laid pea green 73 for 7K some time ago.

So someone is going to make some money for sure.

Yeah the pair we had were not 100% mint like yours. Although until I saw pics of yours I don't think I have seen any that were nicer. Story was a local rancher bought them for his grandkids to run in their "pond". Kids being what they are, one of them lost control and hit a tree on the edge of the pond breaking his arm, and the handlebar. The rancher packed the ski's in his barn and they were never ridden again. We found them for sale down the road from our shop. Some guy at a wrecker service bought them at an estate auction. We bought from him and from the look on his face he thought he was getting a great deal. ;-) I'll have to ask Aaron who we sold them too, because I flat out don't remember. We never did put them in the water before we sold them.

We had #163 and #67

here are some pics I took back before we sold em. http://www.atsracing.net/JS400/index.htm

Been meaning to post this up for awhile now...

I guess it was Ride magazine March/April edition. The article is like 3 pages back from the big Daytona freeride articles.
I didnt scan this, just took a pic.

I believe the guy's name was Clayton Jacobsen.

Seriously though, when this thread first started I wasn't that all interested. But you know the saying a picture is worth a thousand words? yeah I think that applies here... Or an almost brand new never used 400 Kawie is worth 15k! That ski is where it all started. Even the couchers should show some respect!

This is freaking awesome, no doubt, but... Seadoo invented the first ever Jet Propelled (Personal Watercraft / PWC) it was a couche and It was in 1969 and had a belt drive from the engine to the pump!

This is way better though!

I was just posting about that article the other day! It was in a thread about some 440 found in a dealers warehouse never taken out of the crate... And I said some guy in Havasu got a ski and sold to some guy in nebraska, etc etc but I couldn't remember all the details.

Awesome freaking ski and story... How much did he get for it and who did he sell it to or as I recall acording to the article he never did sell it...

Ok guys I have a few questions on this topic. I have a green, what I think is a 73, v-hull ski that I got from a guy for free that was sitting in his barn. The guy claims this ski came from Jupain and I cant find a HIN number anywhere on the ski. The guy had to get the Parks and Wildlife Department to make him a HIN number for this ski. The guy also said it was some kinda racing ski. I took the engine out and it has a big bore 440 in it, but the guy never said he changed the engine out on this ski.

So my question is, besides on the back of the hull, where else could this HIN number possable be? Also any ideas on what I might have. I know it is a early model because the ride plate only bolts onto the pump. Any one have any ideas?
