Tuning dual 44's - couple of questions

I have found that properly tuned carbs do not need a primer.

Maybe I'll just disconnect it.

Meh....a day wasted. Yesterday, I removed the primer line altogether and doubled up on the checkvalves
So I took it out today, with the following:

2.0/95g
115P
105M

Ran like crap.

Changed the main to 110.
Ran like crap.

Changed the pilot to 117.5
Ran like crap.

In fact, it ran the same crappy way every time.
So when I got home, I checked compression (180, both holes), and spark.
Yay, everything there.

Alright, I take the carbs off, and start by checking popoff.
24psi in one.
What's this? The other won't hold ANY pressure!
So I opened it up and what do I find?
I reversed the checkvalves on that one.

GAHHHH!!!!!!

Damn I hate when I make general stupid mistakes like that. Kind of like trying to start a ski with out the lanyard button pulled out and you are checking spark and wondering why it won’t start.

Everyone has done it. :-(

i agree as long as you are playing around with stuff like that silly things get past your attention
IOts Human

but at least it answers why your ski was so rich
you had me so confused as to why that setting i gave you was so far out

How did you reverse the check valves for your high speed circuit? And the check valve for your high speed circuit shouldn't have any affect on your pop off pressure. So if you still aren't holding any pressure in the one carb, you need a new needle and seat.

Matt I have the same setup as you what intake are you useing ? I'm useing the 64x intake .. Is that what you have ? can't wait to see the end result..

I think I may need to jet up a little on the pilot. I'm going to ther lake tomorrow, and I plan to open the bottom screws out a little more, I've also got some 80gm springs, and some 115 pilots. I could also put a 60 into the T to boost pressure.

I hope that the opening of the lower adjuster will do the trick.

I suppose the first change I'll make, if the adjuster doesn't work, will be to change the springs.

Here are today's observations:

I took it out with the following:
2.0/95g at 25psi (measured...it's NOT 24, but 25)
115 Pilots 1-1/4
110 Mains 1-1/2
Doubled up checkvalves

It runs too rich. The bottom end is almost there, but still a bit too rich.
The top end is most definetely waaaay too rich.

I still didn't receive my jetting in the mail.
If it doesn't get here before the next time I go out, I will try to compensate for the slightly rich off idle condition by sticking 115g springs in there to raise the popoff.
ALso, I got 105 mains I'll stick in there.
Oh yeah, the primer is completely disconnected now.

I am using a Riva intake with the carbs reversed. What is your bore and porting?

My porting has grown a bit more extensive than the Sport Port.
In fact, with just the sport port, the carbs worked fine at 25psi popoff, 125pilots, 122.5 mains. (That was at 32 degrees air temp though!)

Matt,
I use the bulb style primer from JSS and have not had a problem with fuel dripping. You may want to try that. It has been on now for 3 years.

I like the primer incase I get water ingestion and have to try and start it up while floating down the river. I also have my primer just inside the hood hooked to where the stock fuel filter would be.

Same here, on all accounts.

I gave the high speed jets some thought today. They may not be rich, but rather lean. When I took the Ski out for the first time a couple of weeks ago,
I ran 125 pilots and 122.5 mains. It was loaded up like crazy until I reached higher speeds and higher RPMs, then it cleared up.
That leads me to believe the high speed jets must have been close.
Closer than those 110s I got now.

I opened the lower screws out to 1 5/8. It seemed pretty good, but I started to wonder about the 115 pilot, so I put it in. Then I did a silly thing. I turned the lower screw back in to 1 1/4. It ran the same. Duh.

So I called a buddy and he said that 1/2 turn out is the same as moving up a jet size. Which is what I did.

So, next time I'll turn it out and see what happens.
