Unacceptable SURF boat mods - discuss

We have 3 second impact zone sometimes.....pure anarchy on the lake. You may get shoved to shore or sucked out into deeper water, so with 3-5 seconds between waves, you have to hook up with someone and get pulled back to the beach.... But that is also for the ride to the beach and back, don't want to get slammed against the rocks. (our ride to the beach is almost identical to oceansides, except the waves are even bigger and crazier by the rocks).

The washing machine that is the ride to the beach made my jaw drop...:eek2: . I've seen that crap from shore, but have never been in it. When you and Matt told me it was "sketchy" THAT was the understatement of the year viewed from my virgin surf eyes. I went from thinking "lets rip this" to "I really hope I get passed this break wall with my life and my ski in tacked. Changed my mindset for the entire day...especially when I lost a shoe 5 seconds out of the marina. lol. Now I know the wall is the worst part.

NO stock SN hoods. But that's more of a mandatory mod than an unacceptable one. Ridiculously designed from a freeride standpoint. But I guess that ain't the intended purpose of a stock ski.

Yea man it gets nuts! And that was not that bad! Wait until you are looking 15 feet down at us from the top of some mish mash mess! And vise versa.......the next time we have some real 7-8 footers...the ride to the beach will be NUTS!

....When the time comes for that...I'LL BE THERE...

Why no stock SN hoods? What would you recommend.

I'm happy I had nose foam and foam in the tray. I would say foam less is unacceptable.

Im a newb what does everyone mean when they say foam? Like padding?

Also what is TL?

Sorry for bringing up old thread and for sounding stupid I know Im gonna get :):):):) for not knowing this stuff. I have a SN superjet just getting into this sport and am going to be riding pismo.

your tray and the nose of your ski has foam from the factory so don't worry about that.

TL stand for total loss electronics. For the most part(only one or two companies mounting them in sealed boxes) they are mounted on an open board which would be in direct contact with salt water. This usually leads to no spark as the salt water is conductive and the spark energy follows the path of least resistance.

My stock sn hood with the stock breather vents take on a lot of water. Plus I hear the sides of the hood are weak and will crack. I will be modding it this winter.

you can duct tape over the top holes for a quick fix and it helps tons. i did this in the surf a few years back on my stock hood. had a decently modded 701 and it wasnt hurting for air at all after. i think the front holes allow more in then we all think

nothing you can do to hurt your riding more than run your pole to short....

if u have any interest in doing any kind of wave riding (or turning over 5mph) it all needs to be done off your back foot...it makes me laugh when people think they need to spend 8k on a ski with more rocker so they dont pearl all the while running a -12 handlepole....

run a proper handlepole so you have weight on the tail and you wont pearl...pretty simple...

and as far as tight poles go a direct quote from Jk : "if your pole is stiff you will ride stiff".....and there is nothing gayer than a strait legger riding around in circles trying to reach his handlepole...

lol right

I think it's funny how offended people get about how to wear a wetsuit and shorts. Safety is the most important thing (helmet, tow loops, foam, extra spark plugs) and I don't think the Cali guys will understand the need for tow loops and straps
Bruce ill buy your FS Square as is...

I like this comment because it mentions shorts, tow loops and offended. If you are riding in any surf of size or consequence and you are having fun taking chances in the critical part of the wave and get seperated from your ski ( never let go , what a load of horse :):):):) that is) The following items soon become your enemies.
1.boots or foot wear
2. gloves
3. Pfd
Foot wear and poorly fitting gloves take away from your ability to swim with efficiency and the Pfd of current design worn on the outside of your wetsuit( that's funny) moves about rides up and causes you to pearl if you attempt to body surf .

I'll tell you whats at critical importance for surf riding. Loose or not properly glued hood seal. Sideways landings push the hood sideways. If you notice the seal to stick out, you must know there is a gap and strong water intrusion. Bilge pumps will not help if you stop for little longer in the rough ocean... Your ski will sink like a modafoka..

Also learning barrel rolls with not reinforced ski... If my hull was not super heavily reinforced it would have been in pieces by now.

Having a Mikey mouse tow rope... if ocean is rough, that harbour freight nylon rope will snap with the first wave impact. Use good and strong climbing rope or you will cry.

dont ask me how I know...
