WDK handlepole

The WDK pole is about 500 in materials alone. It uses billit aluminum, extruded aluminum and prepreg comosite for the pole skin. The new design is $995......up from the 800 price tag on the 1st gen. poles. This is due to the extra machine time in rounding off the edges, removing more material and sanding/polishing the final product.

Nice design.... atleast pictures show he has them in process, now it's just a matter ofn when you will get yours

I think he has 30 units welded up ready for final assembly, but that depends on what the customer wants as the skin. I did not get a prepreg skin, just a carbon one..........but he does have prepreg skin made up.

Fugly IMO I like the enclosed x metal much better. These looks like an erector set I had as a kid.

I don't have a pic of the new skin but that is different as well. He is also producing different skins that gives the pole a different look. One is smooth and sleek while the other has more exotic lines that fits the REV hull design. Construction wise I don't think it get much stronger than this design. It is achually thinner than it was in Daytona so it will have a different overall appearence.

any pictures of the pole with one of his hoods?

I don't have one, but I has a nice smooth bend across the length of the pole so it should rest like a AC roundnose pole does. Here is a pic on the pole on a REV hull......but that is the older design

No doubt it's a nice pole. I'm not looking for cost to copy his design, but what would it cost to build it using different materials and using different construction?

The only way to produce it cheaply is to use a lower grade material........but it would have to be done using less machine time as well. He has done R&D in the past and concluded that the pole is something that you really just can't skimp on. I like the RRP but don't like the fact that the top and bottom peices are cast alumnum. That cuts the cost quite a bit but b/c it is a lower grade than billit you have to use more material = more weight. I don't know if you have seen what cast aluminum looks like when it breaks but it is just powder. IMO the next best pole is the AC Racing pole. But then again I know guys that have bent their AC poles almost 2in................so taking all that into consideration I would have to say that.........if you have the time to wait for a WDK pole, then yes it is worth it. Will I be whistling that tune when/if it arrives..........not sure, but on paper the WDK is the best.

Those welds do not look very pretty at all!

They get sanded and smoothed out. Plus when welding thick aluminum it needs to get HOT, which makes prodcing a clean bead more difficult. (pic is the very first pole he did so it is not that clean)

Good points. Without looking into this too heavily, it appears as though 2 aluminum poles (similar to RRP) would take care of most of the center section. Fabricate some sort of top and bottom mounts and you'd be set. Of course this is easier said than done. I would love to try though.

I think Bonzi Bob made his own pole using that technique.
