IM far from an expert, but that looks lean, or overheated, or something other than mechanical failure to me.
I see the dents in the top of the piston, but the piston above the exhuast port seems to have eroded or burned away.

The ring end is right next to the exhaust port. That is not worn over the exhaust port.

maybe so, but that black crusty stuff and thgat HOLE in the pistons didnt come from that, that burned away.

unless, the ring gave and the combustion gases were so hot traveling PAST the ring seal they burned it thru.

If you snag a ring and it runs on the cylinder walls and then catches teh dowel pin which is lodged in the top of the piston its going to tear a hole in it. That melted side is on the opposite side as the exhaust. Hence the arrow on top of the piston.

when you first started up the motor on the ride it blew....what was your warmup procedure on the motor?

BUT that hole wasnt ripped or torn, or punctured, it was melted.

If you tear a hole its going to rub and melt itself even more.
The procedure i used on this motor after installation was first ride out i rode it about about 2k rpms for about 3 minutes and checked the plugs. Rode it alil higher for a few more minutes checked the plugs. Rode alil more checked the plugs. Loaded it on trailor and took on vaca. Took it out at maryland and warmed it up alil bit then was cruising at about 4k cause it was rough and it went downhill fast.

The ports are barely chamfered and some dont look touched. That is what happened plain and simple. THe other side cylinder needs to be chamfered as well.
