XI

This is how you build a custom ski folks. Every single detail given extreme forethought and handled with utmost patience/perfection. Beautiful build!
Thanks Alamo! The only thing you missed was doing things over 2, 3, 4 times even with that forethought and patience, lol!

On to the pump install. First task was the trim cable. My other builds with trim all had trim tubes which I would just run tube seals on both ends. The XI is an open bulkhead boat so there is just a stub for the trim tube making it possible to only run one boot. The thought of that basically just a throttle cable boot from a JS440, (which works fine btw) by itself up in the pump box didn't instill a lot of confidence in me. So I ran thick wall tubing from the end of the trim cable the way to the lever. The tubing completely seals the trim tube stub and has the added benefit of protecting the cable jacket AND the hull. I actually jacket all my cables now after trying it out on my Phantom build. I then hose clamped a short piece 9/16 ID tube on the trim tube and cable jacket tube.

A Tale Of 3 Pumps.

I was online on the X just as Maxx first posted that he was going to be doing titanium pumps and having bought his stainless pump and loving it I immediately messaged him and got him real time. When I ordered my stainless Maxx pump I ordered it with 4 cooling ports and wanted to verify he would do the same with Titanium, which he confirmed. He didn't have in stock, that he would make it for me, why I love Maxx pumps. A couple of weeks later he sends me pics and ships it. When it showed, well, there was 2 issues. And I'm not posting this for the for purpose of fragging Maxx, QUITE THE OPPOSITE ! This is why I will always use Maxx pumps. The first issue was a miscut in one of the splines. After sending Maxx pics, no squabbling, no excuses, he says just send it back on his dime. The second issue was, well, not an issue, more a preference, he had heat colored my Titanium pump with the colors of the rainbow. When he emailed me pics it was silver. When I brought it up, he asked, "You don't want colored?", well as everyone knows by now I'm not a colors kind of guy. I told him nah, not my thing . He then said to send it ALL back and he would send me silver with 4 ports. he just didn't have one, so it would be a couple of weeks. He gave me his DHL number to pay for it, but it was only good for EXPORTS. He then told me to pay for return shipping and he would reimburse me, which I did, and he did. Exactly how it should be. WHY I ONLY USE MAXX PUMPS ! I did weigh the first pump and to my surprise , the second pump was lighter. I guess those colors are heavy, lol. Here's some pics of the first pump, second pump, and an apples to apples, ( fully assembled wtih prop ) comparison to the stainless Maxx pump.

A Tale Of 2 Props

So this post is a bit of a rant. After talking with guys with Bun tuning experience the consensus is Bun's like revs and getting there quick which for me means starting with a lower pitch prop and tuning up from there. And I know all about every boat is different and they all react differently. Had to start somewhere , so I'm starting with a 9/17. I'm gonna have my hands full with carb tuning as it is and don't want to waste time with an overpitched motor trying to tune it. And I want definitive empirical data. I want to know exactly what I'm doing and how each change affects performance. so I picked up a set of Watcon pitch gages and verified exactly where I'm starting. I pick up a 9/17. And then I see a 10/18 , brand new for a great price, so I grab it. My brand new 9/17, labeled 9/17 reads 10/17. Ok , baseline. Check clearance in pump, tight. My 10/18, labeled 10/18 reads 10/16 . Now I've heard all the "Well Skat actually measures the props differently blah blah blah noise", but really? I don't care if they use a sextant standing on one foot when the moon is in the equinox position of the harvest blue moon to measure, but it would seem a prop labeled higher pitch should read higher pitch. And I know all about bending props. If you bend up , you're going to have to take some off of the OD. And bending down ? Did your performance change come from the perceived pitch change, OR, did it come from increasing the clearance in the wear ring? This is high performance now, every little thing matters, right ? And pitch change? Frankly bending the blade has nothing to do with changing the "pitch", the blade "pitch" is like threads on a screw, you're not changing "pitch", you're changing blade angle. Jet Ski crap. Hocus Pocus Mumbo Jumbo. And the pics in the pitch gages I had are tough to see the differences, I mean we are talking super high precision high performance , lol. Rant over.

Some pics of my rant. The leading edge pics are on 9, 10, 11 degree lines. The trailing edge pics start on the 18 degree line ( what the prop is labeled ) and are followed by the 17, 16, and 15 degree lines. All pics taken with gauges and prop on a sheet of glass on a level hardwood bench.

Time for pump assembly. I run Klotz oil instead of grease. Had to make a tool to pop in prop seal, first one I couldn't' get with my fingers. And it was the fat shaft one from JetManiac.

Before putting the pump in the hull finished installing pole. Wound up putting hoses in bracket and bottom section of pole then slipping pole tubes over breather hoses. No two poles ever go together the same way for me. Installed pole bracket, pole and breather hoses as one onto hull. Sheathed steering cable with tubing and punched drain holes in tubing. And HOT tip of the day, started using 1/4 plastic tubing for fishing the cables. Cable ends thread right in and makes a smooth joint for cable pulls.

did you email impros and ask them wtf?
Nah Quinc, I picked up the 10/18 from a member who bought it new. I have a sneaking suspicion a lot of guys aren't running the props they think they are. That's why I bought the Watcon gauges. I now consider prop pitch the same as pop off, you gotta measure it to know what it is, lol. And even if I did contact them I'm sure I'm going to get some story about how you can't measure the prop with those gauges. Which is a fine line of BS till you have a second prop sitting there for comparative purposes.
