Besides alignment, grease is the most important key to not stripping shafts. Even with perfect alignment you will strip shafts without grease. New o rings and grease often.

Flip the one on the left. It goes in first. Then the one on the right goes in as it’s setting then the propwasher on the shaft.

I think you are risking your new hooker. I can cut you a new shaft for 155$. If your going to reuse that shaft please apply a lot of antisieze.
