Now to the turf, what a pain in the a$$. I should have got John Butti, the turf maestro to turf it, he does such killer work.

After ther tray cured, I glued more polystyrene around the highs and lows of the pump housing, sanded down to make smooth transitions of the highs and lows so there is no hard step under your feet. Then glassed over it. I had widen the tray foot holds years ago and had added a front left...

Once the polystyrene foam was fitted in as tight as I could make it, I started grinding it lower and level. I was afraid to lower the tray too much because I didn't want the transition to the the pump housing to be too much. I removed the original deck off the pump and ground the pump as low and...

John, Tanner Moon tells me that your front sponson mod is the best there is. He loved your ski. My next mod when I have some time, will be to widen my tubbies up toward the front. I would like to know what you found, how about a write on your sponsons.

Without the CPVC drain pipe, the foam will block it's path to the drain plug

I sealed all of the tubing with 5200 and cut polystyrene to fill all the spaces. I like the polystyrene because you can fit in so tight it will give the sides and tray support.

I finally got around to stripping the old turf from the sides of the tray. I re-drilled the hole lower where the exhaust goes through the bulkhead, this allowed me to lower the tray. Because every ski seems to leak into the hull under the tray, I cut holes for drain plugs. To give a path for...

I laid multiple layers of biax cloth from the inside. After it cured, I ground the outside and laid a couple more layers of twill cloth on the outside. Sanded, primed and cut the exhaust hole.

Once the foam was cleaned out and the area that was cut shorter was ground clean to accept the new glass, I cut out some plastic from a face shield and duct taped it over the ends to use as a form.

While I was working on the bond rails, I was also cutting out the tray, removing foam and shortening the rear.

A little grinding, sanding and a lot of itching, it's starting look like a finished rail.

Turned it over, un-bolted the wood holding the foam in place, removed the foam and cut the screws off that went thru the bond rail to hold the foam in place. Since I left the original horizonal portion of the bond rail, I layed two layers of 1208 biax from the end of the original rail out to the...

The wide bond rails really make a big difference in the stability, especially in the white water. Guys that have ridden it say the mod makes the ski feel lighter (until they help carry it out of the water) when riding. It's much easier to ride and less tiring. You won't believe the difference in...

After riding a few aftermarket skis and then buying a Matrix (wonderful handling surf ski), I decided it was time to improve the handleing of my back-up ski, a 98 SJ. I decided to wided the bond rails, replace the wet foam, while in there I would shorten the hull 2" and lower the tray. I...

The bond rail widening helps stability in the SURF. I don't know if this is a mod that will make a difference for you flat water guys. I don't ride flat water, don't know how, don't care too, I'm blessed to have the ocean 20 miles from home, so it's hard to get into the flat water thing. That...

    Custom/Hybrid Matrix Talk

I spent some time on Boyer's ski yesterday, wow putting the OEM pump back on made a huge difference in the surf. His ski with the MAG pump would just whip you in the surf. It had so much traction, when you gassed it, it would grab, stand you up and accelerate with no slide. Then when backed off...
