I'd just check everything each time before you go. The last trailer we had set up like this wasn't as strong and actually started cracking at the welds.
As long as the load capacity can handle it you should be fine. Our trailer holds 4 skis. Three across the back and one across the front on top of four gas cans.

You can get some footholds for $60 I think somewhere on here can't remember who builds them but they have good reviews.
