So you jumped the starter and it started? Then the starter isn't your problem lol. .018" sounds tight, that's like high boost 4 stroke gap, stock superjet b8hs is .039". all the way down to .028" wouldn't be crazy but .018" pretty tight.

Why do you think it’s the starter? Jw. Could be button, solenoid, connections including just the plug between switch and ebox. I would jump power direct to starter to check it before pulling it, could save you a lot of time

Have a multimeter to test coil resistance?

I had same exact symptoms and it was the coil, common for coils to heat up, short through the insulation, cool back down and work again. I have had very similar symptoms and it was the cdi twice, stator once, and start stop switch once, so could be anything but I would guess coil first lol.
