After using total loss on both my ski's, I don't think any charging flywheel is worth it's weight in poo...but that's just me.

I felt the difference pretty clearly adding an aftermarket flywheel. However, I think since you are building a budget boat you should focus your money on building the hull right and then save to build up the motor later.

so get a stock one or a lightened stock one? Worth the extra money?

IMO... sell all the stock electrics and get total loss or at least get a stock flywheel now so you can build it and ride. Then keep your eyes open for total loss deals later.

I know even a used one can be expensive but that is the one mod that I've done that I felt was completely worth all the problems and countless hours that I delt with it. It is the best single mod I've ever done.

I've ridden a boat with a stock flywheel and then a stock lightened flywheel back to back and felt no difference (JUST MY OPINION)
I've also tried a RAD flywheel and could tell a difference, albeit a small one. Certainly not several hundred dollars worth of difference.

When it comes down to charging flywheels...It also depends on the engine setup, a more aggressive ported engine, a little low on compression or just a little big on the impeller pitch, the benefits will increase with a aftermarket aluminum flywheel. On engines that have stock porting, running over 185 lbs compression and propped just right or a little under for flatwater will not see as big of a difference.
If your going to stay with a charging system the TBM is a very good choice for a aftermarket charging flywheel, (when using a MSD Enhancer) with great gains in weight reduction.
A stock lightened flywheel is budget friendly though.
