Surfriding opinions on changin wavedaze to early may next yr?

We were attempting last yr to do wavedaze on fort story base, having it as a charity for the mwr, they have a private beach that has a sweet break on it,thats never used anymore, enabling us to do it any month, the better ones being late may,mid sept. The captain on base that handled mwr was a douche and never sent it up the channels it was suppose to have gone, wouldnt call us back, would have been cool, but dealing with the military is a general pita, the city isnt far behind.choose your poison situation really

ever notice military is real big in chain of command, maybe it could be done but pita either way

Highly likely I have, ya think?

Perhaps you would do well to keep it at the locale you have established for overall exposure (that’s what you want anyhow); you can always try to manage the spot you desire for your own crew’s use on down the line, after having properly networked. Or, you can try it again, you just need to try it a different route (that Captain may no longer be there, whichever one is I’m sure is a busy man with much on his mind).

Either way, maybe it’s time for you to test out whether or not you still have it down with the Ladies, LOL !!! The Officer’s Wives are the ones who would be extremely beneficial to your initial effort, and then some for sure (they get a lot accomplished in this area, and have a lot more pull and experience than you do). I’ll send you an email when I get caught up on things.

Most love to show support for our military, for we know our military sacrifices all for us, while representing us exceptionally well.
1. Congress will hurt our industry.
2. Military can assist our industry.
It’s a good relationship to attempt to forge, especially since we are running out of time.

We have a new navy officer in our group,He might give it one more try with who ever is there now ahead of the mwr, other than that the thread is more about timing and changin the date to gain more exposure and grow it to the next level,Fl is not a big market for freerides unless they are in their back yard they are the biggest group of stuck in the muds their is,its hard to get most those guys to do a meet in another part of fl away from their home break, much less another state.although their are a select few die hards in fl,the draw for these kinda rides are much more with the total die hard crews that travel together often, and from all over the place.Tona is the deal and has a big draw for alot of reasons in the winter season,so the closer wavedaze stays to that model the bigger wavedaze will be,it just needs to be enough time between the 2 that guys have recouped time off,$ and the feen feeling to ride.

alot of us surfriders would like to see at least 3 ocean freerides a yr,Im sure done right they would all have a ton of support.they are the main thing going right now keeping this sport fun and growing

My opinion:

1. Changing the date alone is not going to necessarily garner more attendance; furthermore, it could cost you some attendance.
2. You are thinking too small.
3. You are insulting people you wish to attract in order to grow things, so your approach seems a bit amusingly butt-backwards.
4. You might wish to check this link of many like it out for starters; maybe these ladies will help you, if you approach them differently.

and good luck! :cheer:

thats what we are thinking,we are waiting on a meeting to try and get this date change in. few other changes as well,if any of you have any other suggestions let us know

The worst for them would be if someone in warmer waters decided to take the September/October spot (hurricane season), blew the ride up to huge status, and then they could not move back if they desired, due to conflict of interest. It’s entirely possible...would work extremely well for the warmer water people though. :scratchchin:

There are only so many rides a year you will get a big turnout for. Its hard for everyone to get enough time off for a long drive, then a long weekend of skiing and partying then a long drive home. I say try it and see what happens. Its not like people are setting up rides out of the woodwork. Its a bit of a pain in the a$$ and every joe schmo out there doesn't want the hassles that come with setting one up.

... aint that the truth. Its a ton of work...big respect to anyone throwing one of these rides!

I don't see any other freeride spots on the east coast except maybe Jersey and October is toooo cold for them. I say go for it. It will attract a TON of standup riders from the North. I think Michigan, NY, Ohio and Ontario would LOVE to come down for a season opener!!! (wayyy more riders than Florida in each of those states).

Wilkey for President. Why ask for a date change when you can simply ask for a second weekend? Don't be afraid to up your donation amounts. I am sure everyone on here would pay a little more to have two weekends as opposed to one.

I dont think there will be a full on 2nd wavedaze in oct, with the full beach setup and permit,Allen handles alot of the setup and i dont think he is gonna wana do that twice a yr,plus it would more than likly be smaller both times alot of riders would choose one, kinda defeats the whole idea of what we are working towards. We are shooting for one main larger than current event in the end of april. But We are considering setting up a second ride oct 15th weekend when we dont need a permit to ride off the beach, and is legal to ride anywhere. We can still get the same host hotel for cheap but will not have all the beach setup.Riders will be able to ride as many days and as late as they choose. Then if the main wavedaze event if done in end of april will be the same,no laws to slow us up then either. its win win really

DJ, surely you know Brian of Thrust Innovations started his benefit just this year (March). There is a ride thread on it, and it was in Wetracer Magazine. The donations went to the many who still suffer from the earthquake which occurred in Haiti shortly after the New Year, quite commendable imho. He tends to handle his business affairs more off-site and behind the scenes in supporting many; I think he has even helped Wilkey out in the past. Last I spoke with him, his plans for the next one sounded promising. You could probably contact him to see what his plans are.

I agree with you on the smaller turn out if via splitting a ride Torr.

Well that would be fun then! I'd love to see you on some surf in Sebby! :brap:

My point is, March and April are pretty close together, and WJ's moving the ride from October to April seems as if it would rather infringe on his plans a bit; you might at least contact him and see what his intentions are.

brian,I might go with you on that ride as well,do you have any plans for getting there yet? that ride is attended by primarily fl riders, and such few of them attend wavedaze they really wont effect each other especially a month apart

Again, I think it would be considerate (especially in light of him helping Wilkey out so much) of you to contact him and inquire as to his intentions. He only started the ride this year, marketed it very late after Tona as to politely not interfere with Tona, hence it drew primarily Florida riders. I believe his future plans are to grow the ride to entice others outside of Florida. I do not think he can take the October spot due to his heavy involvement in World Finals, but if you show him the courtesy of speaking with him off-site, perhaps he may show interest in September, idk.
