The Waternut Stunt hull build

The lip is made of 2 layers of 8oz biax. It's strong but I am a little worried that someone will eventually grab that lip like a bond line and yank the ski up on land or something. It might hold up but I kind of doubt it. This pic is before I trimmed it.

Finally got the gp800 midshaft. I noticed two immediate problems. First, when trying to remove the coupler, I ended up unscrewed the splines from the shaft coupler...didn't know such a thing existed. Second, the splines on the midshaft don't start until the threaded section that I just unscrewed which means the driveshaft won't actually touch the midshaft splines. Not sure how highroller got around this unless he moved the bulkhead backwards but the pic that chips sent me a long time ago makes the bulkhead look like it's in the same place. I sent chips a pm about it in hopes he can help.

Well I'm thinking chips has a gp760 midshaft as they are the only ones (that I've seen) that are this short and don't have the shaft coupler. I did manage to snag one this evening but I'm kind of thinking of just bolting it all back together with the SJ shaft for now and riding for a while before I slap the new midshaft in. I guess it'll depend on when it ships really...

Well went out to ride it today. I'll need 1 high jet to make it right since there are two sizes and one is richer than the other but it's rideable right now.

As for the recent mods... The spray lip good. It doesn't keep the spray out of your face if you're kneeling but it keeps the majority of the spray out of your eyes when riding normally.

Shifting the engine back about an inch with the gp760 midshaft is awesome! I highly recommend it and the actual work required to shift it back takes less than a day. The ski is much easier to cruise on now but doesn't seem to have lost any of it's other handling characteristics. It doesn't ride quite like a stock length SJ but it's a lot better. It will occasionally plow if I ride in heavy chop but much less frequently than before. I can actually ride with a foot forward now if I want to which I couldn't do before. I was even able to pick up the GP760 for $50 shipped and it looked brand new.

So before, the engine was too far forward and made it handle nose-heavy?

Yes.

I used a fx-1 midshaft in my stunt, 5/8 in shorter

how much shorter is the 760 shaft?

The 760 is about an inch shorter than normal so you probably wouldn't get much out of it over the FX-1 shaft. It's hard to actually measure the shafts accurately but I moved the engine back about 1.1 inches from before.

So you have my attention on this now.l have a fx1 midshaft bearing laying around here somewhere. But that means drilling and tapping new holes in the plates! Oh Boy! That sounds like a blast.....You guys think it will make that much of a diff?

Don, the bearing housing is the same size between '94-up SJ's, GP760, and FX-1's.

I think Don is referring to actually drilling and tapping the engine mounting plates.

As for the difference it makes... I can now chase boats when they are going faster than "slow as balls". Mcdog tried to clock me the other day when I was crusing around and he said around 25mph which is a whole lot faster than when I used to cruise at which was just above idle. I now have the confidence and control to be able to approach the wake as some kind of speed.

I think he means the midshaft .

That must be the difference . haveing a shorter shaft , and the motor set back must be the ticket , I could always go pretty fast. I could even hold it down full throttle for a while , its just not alot of fun

I think so. Before, if I tried to go faster to catch a boat, the nose would dig in and I'd be thrown off the ski and underwater in 3 seconds or less.

I will admit that Dan knew what he was talking about when he said the shorter shaft would be better but at the same time he totally screwed up which shaft would work since it's the GP760 shaft and not the GP800 shaft. Also, the biggest reason I didn't go with his recommendations from the beginning was because I was fed up with all his last minute surprises.

l heard you had a short shaft....can't remember where,though?

And yes,l meant like waternut said actually drilling and tapping new holes in the engine mounting plates. but if makes that much of a diff, then it would be worth the effort.Being able to go faster than just above idle. That seems like an interesting concept.l would actually be able to chase a boat down.

Ok,so whose has a short shaft (not you, chad.keep it lol) for sale.

Anyone figure out how to put a bow strap on these hulls yet? The only thing I can think of is to mount some kind of U bolt on the front but that just seems like a blunt stake that could potentially hit me one day. My other thought was to mount a strap at the base of the pole but not sure how well the pole bracket would take the pulling loads.

Yeah that's kind of what I meant. I was really just thinking about putting one in the bond rail since it's strongest there. Yours is certainly in a better location though. I'll probably reinforce that area before I do that...which means pulling it out of the water. ugh

l did not reinforce mine. The piece l bought had a stainless plate on the inside and out.Of course l do have a sheet of 5.5 carbon in the engine bay.
