The Waternut Stunt hull build

Yeah, now that you see the difference, you can see why I decided to cut a huge hole in a "perfectly good hull". I'm thinking this is going to affect how the hull handles in a tight turn when I want to get back to my setup wake. I should be able to figure it out regardless but we'll see...

So far I've got a layer of 12oz biax on the inside. On the outside, I have 3 layers of 9oz weave, some filler, and 2 more layers of 9oz weave. Each one overlaps the last. I may throw a layer of weave inside the engine bay to make it smoother but I'm thinking I've got enough meat in there to hold up. Opinions? More? This is just a half arsed brush job of primer because I didn't want to clean the paint gun twice. I'll get to sanding a little later.

Thanks Motoman. I'm curious on handling myself. The water temp is probably around 49-51° so pretty cold but I'll test it when everything is ready in a few more weeks regardless of water temp.

All done for this mod. I'm not going to bother with the slight corners on the outside chines.

I ran out of the blue paint that I originally used on this ski. This blue is what I used on my boat instead. I think it's a little lighter but I'll see fairly soon how close it is when I pull the masking off.

Nice work and probably a fruitful effort!

I bet this will be a major handling improvement. It would also be cool to see what the effect of softening the outside edges of the hull would be.

serious question here. how many hours you have in this thing since it got to your door? you have done alot of work to that beast

I don't know for sure. If I had to put a number on it, I'd guess around 100-150 hours of actual work on the hull alone. I would say near half of that time was spent in the first couple months. That wouldn't include waiting for resin/glue to cure or fixing, tuning, and swapping mechanical parts. However, a lot of the work is due more to my nature. I always want to make things better so I'm always tinkering. That said, having the right tools cuts down the time necessary considerably. Like this nose mod... from the time I started marking off the lines for my cut to pulling the masking tape off after the paint dried was probably only 6-7 hours.

Well I finally finished this up. I put a stock RN waterbox in it and rebuilt the engine. Now the tuning is all screwy and it won't idle for more than a few seconds without giving it gas. The only other thing that I can think of that may have made a change was the carb position. I had to flip them around due to the throttle cable position on the protec intake manifold vs the 760 manifold but I flipped the pulse line as well. The pulse did have to be a little longer due to the funky positioning. The reeds are the same though. I added the stock fuel selector switch back in so that I have a reserve line but it blubbers on both lines. It hits good right off the bottom but when I try to jump, it doesn't want to rev out. One other thing... I primed the primer last night but all the primer lines were empty this morning and I couldn't get fuel back in them. Maybe it was causing issues but it was only on the "ON" fuel line and not the reserve line. Any ideas?

Anyway...ride report. Slow speed handling is similar to what it was at least on smooth water. Might be better in the chop. When I make a sharp turn, it seems like the nose dips down a little more and I slide some but I can recover. I think I'm just a little out of practice. Higher speed handling improved massively. I'm still breaking in the engine so I didn't go hog wild but I did get the ski up to what feels like 35-40mph (faster than I've ever gone on that hull without getting pitched) and it felt clean without any walking or digging.

Well the hull is better without a doubt. The negatives that I mentioned are exceptionally minor. The engine on the other hand is being a sorry sack of sh*t and I don't understand why.

I cant beleive tht you still havent b een able to ride more than 30 mph .with out getting pitched , that stock intake fixed mine .. but you tried that and switched back from a stock grate.

Yeah I ran the open intake grate for a while and it made a little difference but not enough. Moving the engine back did what the intake grate did times 10. You were already running the fx-1 midshaft which is shorter than stock but longer than my current GP760 midshaft. When I moved the engine back I could go faster but it had to be done in short blasts. Shoot up to 35-40, back it down to 20, then back up to 35-40. Every time I would get up to speed, I could feel the back end start to walk out of control so I immediately had to back it down. Now I feel like I can maintain that speed for longer. I'll give it another go next week and also see if I can figure out what's wrong with my ski.

Well, doing all this to the hull is more about being normal for me and less about the hull being abnormal. I just do stuff like this. Modifying fiberglass is WAY cheaper than doing house or yard projects and WAY less heavy lifting.

I'd love to make the hood longer so that I can have a normal sized hood opening but that was more than I wanted to do deal with at this time of the year. It's not like these hulls are selling like hot cakes so I figure I'll have this hull until I destroy it. Maybe one day I'll tackle that. I've already got plans on how I can accomplish it.
