How much does it cost to get a setup like this to get started being able to make most things out of aluminum, brass or the plastics you have here? Is the design and controller programming included with the machine? What's your max dimensions?
I would love to be able to make all the crazy stuff I think up. I would like a new laptop but I figure what's the point, I can't print anything I design anyway.
Plan on about $4K just to get you started with the basics...and I mean basics.
Milling machine $1500
Ballscrew conversion kit $750
Gecko 540 CNC controller kit $650
Mach 3 or 4 software $200 for license.
PC with touchscreen and parallel port $500
Basic tooling will run you another $500
Most everything is available to buy off the shelf but these kits assume you understand machining and have access to other machines so they are not simple bolt on kits.
My functional limit is 19" in X, 5.75 in Y and 15" in Z
X is side to side, Y is front to back and Z is up and down.
I already have plans and most of the supplies to upgrade my spindle to a 2HP 3phase motor that will get me into the 8000 RPM range. Just need to build brackets and a pulley drive system. I will also need to upgrade my current spindle bearings to something rated for the higher speed. That's another $650.
I was measuring it up today to start machining the spacer blocks to increase my Y axis travel from 5.75" to 9.5". That's another $150.
I also plan to convert my Lathe at some point but other than making domes or candle sticks, I am not quite sure what work I would have for it.
