How much does it cost to get a setup like this to get started being able to make most things out of aluminum, brass or the plastics you have here? Is the design and controller programming included with the machine? What's your max dimensions?

I would love to be able to make all the crazy stuff I think up. I would like a new laptop but I figure what's the point, I can't print anything I design anyway.

Plan on about $4K just to get you started with the basics...and I mean basics.

Milling machine $1500
Ballscrew conversion kit $750
Gecko 540 CNC controller kit $650
Mach 3 or 4 software $200 for license.
PC with touchscreen and parallel port $500
Basic tooling will run you another $500

Most everything is available to buy off the shelf but these kits assume you understand machining and have access to other machines so they are not simple bolt on kits.

My functional limit is 19" in X, 5.75 in Y and 15" in Z
X is side to side, Y is front to back and Z is up and down.

I already have plans and most of the supplies to upgrade my spindle to a 2HP 3phase motor that will get me into the 8000 RPM range. Just need to build brackets and a pulley drive system. I will also need to upgrade my current spindle bearings to something rated for the higher speed. That's another $650.

I was measuring it up today to start machining the spacer blocks to increase my Y axis travel from 5.75" to 9.5". That's another $150.

I also plan to convert my Lathe at some point but other than making domes or candle sticks, I am not quite sure what work I would have for it.

Nothing crazy but designed and built a pair of bushings and a crush sleeve that all work together and hold each other in place so you aren't fighting it while installing the pole bolt.

IDK if this counts for this thread, but I don't really care anyway so ya'll just enjoy damnit...

Last Fall I did a "Overland Challenge" and the trophies they gave our were kinda lame, but they made them rough on purpose, or so they say.

Well i've been frequenting the local scrap yard lately and found a lot of cool schwag that you could make trophies out of. I decided that I should take up the mantle and build the trophies for the upcoming Challenge this Spring. My plan was to do it for free, maybe ask for some event gear (shirt, hoodie, etc) in exchange for the trophies.

Of course its spiraled out of control and cost me 3x what I thought it would run. But the upside is I get to exercise my creative abilities, which I need to do in order to remain sane in this life, and I'm in complete control of how they look. I plan on making 1st, 2nd and 3rd, plus a "Tough Break" award. So far 1st is 95% done, 2nd and 3rd are 50% done and Tough Break is 90% done. The event is in the middle of next month.

So here are some photos of 1st and Tough Break. The wrenches are 1 3/4", the piston is out of a Cummins Tractor. The rest is just scrap yard pickings.
The maps on the boards are Topo maps of the area we're wheeling in, which I found online, the other photos are also from the event or images from the area we'll be in.

1st place is 27" tall and weighs 35lbs. The piston is 6.5" x 6.5" It's massive.

Tough Break: I chopped up the board with a machete, then burnt it. The photos are of generic broken trucks. I had the ring gear snapped at the scrap yard by one of the equipment operators. Still have to add the "Tough Break" emblem.

That's great and it fits right in with the theme of the thread.

I had a stack of 951 Pistons from my Seadoo days and always wanted to make them into a trophy or a huge clock.

My only compulsion is to look away. MSD TL has never held my interest. I get asked all the time to build TL systems for people but I turn them away every time.
