Custom/Hybrid Jloria's "Ah, freakout!" build...2012 Superfreak -4.3

Hi

I am about to cut the holes for the steering and trim cables, etc to go through my SF hull and just want to check something with you....my sense is that the holes might work out better if drilled in front of the pole bolt to facilitate a more relaxed route for the bend of the steering cable. ...Did you see any issue with your cable bending in front of the pole bolt ? Any comments on what the other guys have done....please chime in ...I only want to drill these holes once. Thanks again for your help so far in documenting every step.

btw....if you ever in Cape Town, it will my pleasure to take you riding in our surf, which gets big as houses every other weekend....just bring a wet suit...water is cold about 50 ish degrees

UMI throttle is larger to accept the JM large throttle cable...

kvpi was too small

starting to run my cables as well

mine holes are pretty far forward, cut to just barely fit an inch and 1/8 segmented bilge line they stay put without issue. There is enough room in front to accomodate without issues pretty much wherever you want to put em but farther forward is better, but it depends on what pole you are running too.

That's a good question...

it was a little tight getting the some of the cables in, but no tighter than my last ski...UMI pole

I guess I never really thought about doing that...just kinda followed the crowd

seems like it would work out...

i will think about it some more and get back to you if I come up with any negatives

it is the backing plate for a stainless u-bolt. usually they come with 2 plates, I only needed one for a project so I keep extra stuff in case I need to mcguyver something.

^^^ I think Buzzard said a SXR or 650sx spring works, but im sure the OP will advise.

Really well documented build man. Needs more gifs tho...... LOL j/k...

I either get in too much of a hurry to take pics of every step or i'm using my phone as a music source.
Hope you get it on the water soon, cool build.

perhaps i missed it...

what kind of spring is that you are running on the xmetal pole setup?

I picked up two different kawaii styles off a member here. I seemed to like that one the best for this setup & tension.

I am pretty sure it's a 650sx style spring. It has the L shape on both ends but I ended up cutting the smaller one to fit inside the x-metal pole. Then I just wrapped it hose. Hopefully it works the way I intended it too.

Lots of pics...ha ha

I had hoped to help some people out and get some help along the way. Lord knows I needed it.

This is my 1st 'real' build by myself after a long break from skis. Even when I had a ski, my knowledge was very limited but it's growing for sure.

'Soulman' brought me into the sport and helped a ton on my last ski. I credit a lot of my knowledge to him and that's why I say this is my 1st 'real' build alone.

We'll be on the water soon...

I'd put a plate under that spring soon. I remember back in the days riding 550s that the aftermarket springs similar to what you have worked its way into the glass. Just my 2 cents...

I would def take u up on that offer to check out the surf. Just need $$$ for a ticket and time off...ha ha

Your cable question:

After running more cables and installing a nose plate this weekend, I feel that the cables are best in front of the pole bolt(towards the tray). It would be very tight the other way but I still think it would work.

**COUPLER QUESTION**

My coupler is less than 1mm off the top. Engine side is higher.

Sides of the coupler are right on, but the top is between .35mm and 1.0mm it seems. It's tough to measure exactly.

Pump and midshaft should be dead on. I am running couch mounts.

I think the SJ manual gives a tolerance up to 1, if my memory serves me correctly.

Would this be ok to run or is it imperative that I get the engine lower?

Engine lower:

If so, How do I accomplish this? Shave the motor mounts?

Take some material off top of the motor mounts or the bottom or is that a big no no?

weekend progress

Installed JSS fuel pick up kit...didnt use the brass since it would have hit the hood liner

Just used the rubber with the stock lines and the the filter pickups at the ends...added some hose clamps for security and to add weight

Installed JSS primer kit minus the primer bulb that he supplies

The primer bulb would not stick far enough out past the bulkhead for me to get the nut on

I got another primer bulb style from an internet small engine supplier that I have used to fix weedeaters & lawnmowers

Also went to our local Ace hardware store for some very small screws with flats and lock washers

As you can see, there are some holes in the bulkhead from me trying to fit the CF ebox mount.

bulkhead looks like swiss cheese in some places but I am not worried about it at this point.

I will fill it with some epoxy over the winter and just returf the firewall...Boom done...

I'm digging your "screw it I wanna ride" attitude. Get that thing done so you can ride! I finally got my ski back in the water yesterday, now I'm itching to ride again!

hood latch and limiting rope set up installed...

i ended up using a home depot front door satin aluminum kick plate to prevent the spring from rubbing into the glass...i tried to find out what type of metal its really made out of...not sure if its all aluminum or just coated in aluminum...no biggie if it starts rusting or rubs through...if it does, I will make a proper plate and run that

...bought SS hardware with lock washers

Used some stainless loops with backing plates from west marine and from JM that he supplies with the hood strap kit

Used longer bolts to attach one loop to one side of the xmetal steering
