Also, in your video at between 21:16 and 21:27 you can see where your HIN tag should be located. I can easily one of the rivet holes that once held it on there.

Yeah I understand by law the vin on the back plate should be there. But like i told the judge, this ski was built for the surf. If you read the code for what im charged for... "
No person shall intentionally deface, destroy, or alter
the motor number, other distinguishing number, or identification mark
of a vehicle required or employed for registration purposes without
written authorization from the department, nor shall any person place
or stamp any serial, motor, or other number or mark upon a vehicle,
except one assigned thereto by the department."

Like you guys are all saying. Highly doubtful, but still completely possible that my vin on the back was indeed still there after the scupper valve was installed and it came off after being ridden very hard in the surf. There for no vin was "intentionally" removed. So technically if i bought another motor and swapped the stickers that would also be illegal. The cop wasnt trippen about 1 of the vins being messed up. He was worried everyone of them was tampered with. There wouldnt have even been a court case if it was illegal to remove just 1 vin because i would instantly be guilty. NO point in having a vin inspector come out and hack up my ski looking for another vin, it would be irrelevant. But the judge knows absolutely nothing about jet skis and laws for them, Only what I quoted above. All i need to do is get concrete evidence proving that my only vin on the inside of the hull is where it is supposed to be. which should prove that the ski is legit.(a couple of you have sent me their vins glued into the inside of the hull in the exact location mine was located in). I know im in the worst situation possible but i cant just let them take my ski after this. Especially since I saved up for days to get it and havent even ridden it yet. Thank you guys a bunch! All of this information is more than helpful to me! And as far as the pic saying where the vins should go, technically there is no real information that i need. I need it to say "it comes glued in, in a vertical position located in the engine bay on the top right." or something like that to help me out.

Yamaha can provide this info. Might be late though

my experiance is no new evidence is allowed to be presented on appeal. Not sure in your case what the rules are

@Wet Dreams you selling a lot of replacement vins right now because of this thread?
Unfortunately my machine has been broken for quite some time. It seemed like as soon as it broke I got more requests for HINs than I have ever had. Maybe it has something to do with the situation this thread speaks to. Can't wait for my employer to figure out our laser situation. I'm losing money every day that's it's broken lol

This situation does sound pretty messed up. Can anyone speak to laws about tampering with a vin? I get a ton of customers who have had their plastic ones fall off. I personally replaced the one on my ski with a metal one because it was cracked in several places. If you paint a ski you have to remove the tag and replace it. Was this cop just power hungry or is this a common occurrence in the communist California?

idk if it was your buddy you bought it from, but you might have more luck taking legal action against the seller instead of getting the judge to overturn his decision. messed up situation either way.

Yeah i dont have it in me to sue this dude over it. He sold me it and was honest about everything. Im not that messed up to make him pay for it too. And @Harbor this isnt an appeal process. I guess if i filed for an appeal it would take years, This is a "motion for reconsideration" i guess meaning i have to prove there is strong NEW evidence helping my case. Basically have to prove what the cop told him was bs. If anyone can send me more pics of the inside of their engine bay with vins glued on will help me. Doesnt even have to be a superjet, just something proving vins do come glued in. Or if anyone can take pics of the backs of their 1996 superjets showing where the stock rear bumper guards screw into the hull it will help me greatly. Thank you so much guys. Talked to derek at the ski clinic and he is more than willing to sign papers and im hiring someone to come out and notarize it.

Oh ok sounds good. My bud has a 96 I'll ask him to take some pics too....

On the question of "if rivited HIN's can be removed and reinstalled during a repair"

My co-worker is an X PD, he called his buddies at the station and asked this question "we are doing a repair to a jet ski here at our dealer ship, we need to remove the rivited vin to gain access to the area of repair, can we ?

The cop checked with auto theft department and called back "NO the Rivited HIN cannot be removed for any reason"

Sucks. I really hope this ends well for you just so it like a big F YOU to the cop.

Civil forfeiture laws are out of control... Please keep in mind that if things were a bit different and you had 4k cash on you going to buy the ski and this jackhole pulled you over, he would have most likely taken the cash from you as well. He can make up anything from going to purchase a stolen jet ski to buying drugs or saying something like normal people don't carry around 4k in cash only criminals do. It's up to you to prove your property is innocent. (No wonder people hate cops)

Fro Diesel is right. In hindsight, a lawyer would probably tell you what you should have done like not answered any questions and not consented to searches without warrants. Judges side with cops, just how it goes... The more you talked to this stupid cop the more ammunition he got for the court date, regardless if it was accurate or not. If you kept quiet and just let them take it without a search, it may have been easier to prove in court it was yours with just some simple paperwork. We'll never know.

I really hope you can get enough evidence to change the Judge's mind. You should post up some info for the judge and court case so others can email/call them. Pressure from the community would really help IMO. Good Luck!

EDIT: What about the cops badge number? I'm sure there is a way to file a complaint against the officer as well. At least blemish his record. Get everyone to file complaints and start calling the CHP!

I can't find any pics of the HIN's from my 96 Superjet but here are a couple from a 96 I had briefly and then my 07.

The 07 rear is messed up because they moved it to the right side rather than the left rear as the standard calls out for.

Go to your local Yamaha dealer, tell them what happened, show them the video and see if they'll help you out with something written or verbal. Judge probably won't give a poop if it's from a Yamaha dealer or Yamaha Corporate. (regarding HIN plate placement and method of attachment)

No not yet. I have a number for an attorney im calling tomorrow. I asked a few familly friends who know of atterneys and they gave me the number to one who can help. And thank you @ocdsolutions @Matt Jones for the pictures! I just drove an hour and a half today to look at a bone stock 1996 superjet and i tried to take as many detailed pictures and videos on it. And @Harbor are you serious?? lol man this is crazy to me i dont see how these laws can be this strict on all of this. My best bet is to come up with the most evidence i can now just to prove that when buying a brand new bottom end they come with no stickers or engravings on them, that the rear vins commonly fall off without intention, and that the vin on the inside of the hull come glued in. All of this info and link to the yamaha sites and those pictures regarding the definition of the code i was charged with is helping me a TON. Im just a 20 year old noob trying to be my own lawyer. Much love to everyone on this forum.
