Who installed those footholds? Does not look like the area was even sanded at all before laying the glass. The gelcoat should have been removed (sanded off) in that area.

I put mine in the freezer for a few hours with the caps off to let the air in them get cold. Then quickly put the caps back on and use them. The cold air is denser than warm air and they will stay nice and tight. It can't really physically expand larger than the size of the plastic bottle.
